Electrolysis FAQ
where skincare is a science & a love language
Everything you need to know about permanent hair removal — answered with the transparency and expertise your skin deserves.
The Basics
Electrolysis is the only FDA-approved method of permanent hair removal. A licensed electrologist inserts a tiny, sterile probe into each hair follicle and delivers a precise amount of electrical current to permanently destroy the follicle's ability to produce hair. Once treated, that follicle can never regrow hair again.
Laser targets melanin (pigment) in the hair shaft, which means it works best on dark hair against light skin — and results are classified as permanent reduction, not permanent removal. Electrolysis destroys the follicle directly through electricity, making it effective on all hair colors and all skin tones, including fine, light, gray, and white hair that laser cannot treat.
There are three modalities:
Galvanic — uses direct current to produce a chemical reaction that destroys the follicle. Highly effective but slower.
Thermolysis (shortwave) — uses heat energy (radio frequency) to destroy the follicle. Faster treatment times.
Blend — combines both galvanic and thermolysis for enhanced effectiveness. This is the most commonly used method today.
Yes — electrolysis is the only hair removal method recognized as permanent by the FDA. When a follicle is fully and correctly treated, it cannot regrow hair. However, because hair grows in cycles (anagen, catagen, telogen), multiple sessions are needed to treat all follicles in their active growth phase. Consistency is key to achieving full permanence.
A Note for Melanin-Rich Skin
Safe. Effective. Designed for You.
At Faces By Etosh, electrolysis is a cornerstone service because it is the one hair removal method with no pigment dependency. Whether your concern is facial hair, razor bumps, ingrowns, or hyperpigmentation triggered by other removal methods — electrolysis is safe and effective on deeper skin tones when performed by a knowledgeable, trained professional.
The Process
Sensation varies by individual and treatment area, but most clients describe it as a brief warmth, pinch, or stinging with each pulse. Areas with thinner skin (upper lip, bikini line) tend to be more sensitive. Topical numbing cream applied before your session can significantly reduce discomfort. We always tailor intensity to your comfort level.
Session length depends on the area being treated and the density of hair. Common session times:
Upper lip or chin — 15 to 30 minutes
Brow shaping — 20 to 30 minutes
Underarms — 30 to 45 minutes
Bikini area — 45 to 60+ minutes
We recommend starting with shorter sessions to assess your skin's response before building up.
This varies widely depending on the area, hair density, hormonal factors, and how consistently you attend sessions. On average, clients see significant clearance in 12–18 months with regular appointments. Sessions are typically scheduled every 4–8 weeks, aligned with your hair growth cycle. During your consultation we'll give you a personalized estimate.
Virtually any area of the body can be treated with electrolysis, including:
Face — upper lip, chin, cheeks, jawline, sideburns
Brows — for precise shaping and definition
Neck and nape
Underarms
Bikini line and Brazilian
Legs and arms
Abdomen and chest
Before & After Care
To get the most out of your session:
Let hair grow in for at least 3–5 days prior — do not wax or thread before your appointment
Shaving is fine and won't interfere with treatment
Come with clean skin — no heavy lotions, makeup, or sunscreen on the treatment area
Apply numbing cream (as directed) 45 to 60 minutes before if desired
Stay well hydrated — hydrated skin conducts energy more evenly
Avoid caffeine and alcohol the day of, as they can increase skin sensitivity
Some redness, minor swelling, or small scabs around treated follicles are completely normal and typically resolve within 24–72 hours. Avoid:
Touching or picking at the treated area
Direct sun exposure for at least 48 hours
Heavy exercise or sweat-inducing activity for 24 hours
Makeup on treated skin for at least 24 hours
Harsh exfoliants or actives (AHAs, retinols) for 48 hours
Use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer and SPF daily to support healing and prevent post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation — especially important for melanin-rich skin.
When performed by a skilled professional with appropriate energy settings, the risk is very low. For melanin-rich skin tones, we take extra precautions — using precise settings, treating in shorter intervals, and recommending targeted aftercare to minimize inflammation. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is the main concern for deeper skin tones, which is why choosing an esthetician experienced with melanin-rich skin is so important.
No — waxing and threading remove the hair from the follicle, and electrolysis needs the hair shaft present in the follicle to conduct energy properly and destroy it. Between sessions, shaving or trimming are the only recommended methods of managing regrowth. We know it can be a patience game — but it's worth it.
Candidacy & Conditions
Yes — electrolysis is safe and highly effective for all skin tones, including deep melanin-rich complexions. Unlike laser, electrolysis does not target pigment. At Faces By Etosh, we specialize in melanin-focused skincare and bring that same expertise to electrolysis, ensuring proper technique, settings, and aftercare protocols tailored to your skin.
Electrolysis may not be suitable for everyone. Please disclose the following at your consultation:
Pacemaker or implanted cardiac device
Active skin infections, open wounds, or inflamed acne in the treatment area
Certain autoimmune conditions or blood disorders
Pregnancy (avoid during first trimester; consult your OB)
Current use of blood thinners or certain medications
History of keloid scarring
We'll always complete a full health intake before your first session.
Yes — this is one of the most transformative benefits for our clients. Pseudofolliculitis barbae (razor bumps) is common in clients with coily or curly hair, particularly in the beard and bikini areas. By permanently eliminating the follicle, electrolysis eliminates the source of recurring ingrowns, bumps, and the hyperpigmentation that often follows. It's a long-term solution, not just a temporary fix.
